DESCRIPTION:Many open source communities struggle to achieve strong communi
ty participation from Asia despite the\nregion representing 60% of the ent
ire world population. Although there are numerous participants from\nIndia
and China\, the number is disproportionately low when compared with North
America and Europe.\nAn obvious reason could be time zones\, however\, as
a Japanese woman who grew up and worked in\nJapan\, and as a wife and a m
other\, it seems probable this could be explained by culture and other soc
ial\nbarriers like language. Although we appreciate the benefit of diversi
ty in open source\, it remains\nchallenging to have an optimally balanced
community. Do we compromise by having some people in\neach region to convi
nce ourselves that we’ve achieved a target? Or do we look for ways to ov
ercome the\nbarriers enabling real benefit from multiple perspectives? Man
y DEI categories are grouped together\nwhich removes our ability to identi
fy areas needing improvement. Asia consists of 40 countries whose\nculture
and languages are very different\, and Asians who grew up in North Americ
a have different\nperspectives from those who grew up in Asia. Diversity i
s defined by a combination of multiple factors.\nLet’s look at our goals
more closely and see what communities can actually do to bring real value
